Fireplace accessories for lighting, carrying and burning

Anyone with an open fireplace soon notices that the fire itself is the easy part. The hassle is around it: getting wood small, carrying it indoors without a trail of bark, and moving glowing logs without scorching your hand.

These fireplace accessories solve exactly those things. You can buy them separately or as a bundle that has it all together.

What do you really need for a fireplace?

Three things come back with almost everyone. Kindling that is small enough, because you will not get a thick log going. Something to bring the wood indoors without a mess. And protection for your hands, because a fireplace asks for shifting and adjusting while it burns.

Storage plays a part too. Wood lying loose beside the fireplace makes a mess and draws damp, while a basket keeps it together and doubles as the way to fetch a new supply.

Hout klein krijgen

Een gietijzeren houtklover werkt met een hamer in plaats van met een zwaaiende bijl. Je zet het blok in de veiligheidsring en slaat er van bovenaf op, waardoor je handen buiten het slagvlak blijven. Geschikt voor blokken tot ongeveer 24 centimeter doorsnede.

Een vilten houtmand van zestig liter met houten handgrepen draagt comfortabel twintig tot dertig kilo. Het vilt beschermt je vloer tegen krassen, en omdat de mand vormvast is blijft hij staan waar je hem neerzet, ook als hij leeg is.

Je handen beschermen

Leren handschoenen van suède met een mouw van eenenveertig centimeter beschermen ook je onderarm tegen hitte en vonken. Ze zijn EN 407:2020 gecertificeerd tot 350 graden, dus je pakt er ook een gietijzeren pan mee van het vuur.

Tip

Wood wool with wax burns on for eight to ten minutes and needs no lighter fluid. One portion under your wood is usually enough, and because there is nothing in it but wood wool and wax you get no chemical smell in the room. The difference with cubes is in wood wool or firelighter cubes.

What do you need for an open fireplace?

How does a cast iron log splitter work?

You stand the block upright in the safety ring and strike it from above with the supplied hammer. The blade is fixed in the splitter, so your hands stay clear of the striking area. Blocks up to about 24 centimetres across fit in it.

How hot are heat resistant gloves tested?

These are certified to EN 407:2020 up to 350 degrees. The cuff is forty-one centimetres long and protects your forearm too, because that is exactly where you reach over the glow when you move a log.

How long does wood wool burn?
